Hi-TONE Hearing tests for Newborn

Approximately 1% - 2% of newborns are affected with hearing loss. Every year, about 665,000 babies around the world are born with significant hearing loss. The earlier that hearing loss is discovered and treated, the higher the chance of normal development at a rate appropriate for their age. Hearing of newborn can be assessed by Oto Acoustic Emissions and Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry.

Oto Acoustic Emissions (OAE)
This is a simple, non-invasive test for hearing defects in newborn babies and in children who are too young to cooperate in conventional hearing tests. This primary screening tool tests for the presence of a click-evoked OAE. Otoacoustic emissions also assist in differential diagnosis of cochlear and higher level hearing losses.

Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) or Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
This test measures the hearing nerve's response to sounds. This test is often done if a newborn fails the hearing screening test given in the hospital shortly after birth, or for older children if there is a suspicion of hearing loss that was not confirmed through more conventional hearing tests. The BERA test is safe and does not hurt. This test can be completed only if the child is sleeping or lying perfectly still, relaxed and with his or her eyes closed, and may sometimes require sedation.

Hi-TONE Hearing Tests For Elderly

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is common in elderly people. About one-third of people between the ages of 65 and 75 have hearing problems. About half the people who are 85 and older have hearing loss. Whether a hearing loss is small (missing certain sounds) or large (being profoundly deaf), it is a serious concern. If left untreated, problems can get worse.
Hearing loss can affect your life in many ways. You may miss out on talks with friends and family. On the telephone, you may find it hard to hear what the caller is saying. At the doctor's office, you may not catch the doctor's words. Sometimes hearing problems can make you feel embarrassed, upset, and lonely. It's easy to withdraw when you can't follow a conversation at the dinner table or in a restaurant. It's also easy for friends and family to think you are confused, uncaring, or difficult, when the problem may be that you just can't hear well.
Signs of Hearing Loss:

• Have trouble hearing over the telephone
• Find it hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking
• Need to turn up the TV volume so loud that others complain
• Have a problem hearing because of background noise
• Sense that others seem to mumble
• Can't understand when women and children speak to you

Pure tone audiometry (PTA)
It is the key hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual, enabling determination of the degree, type and configuration of a hearing loss.

Hi-TONE Hearing tests for children with ear problems

Tympanometry
Tympanometry tests the movement of the eardrum when an ear infection or other middle ear problem is suspected. A doctor places the tip of a handheld tool into the child's ear. The tool changes the air pressure inside the ear and produces a clear tone. Then the tool measures how the eardrum responds to the pressure and the sound. The results of this test are used to help figure out what is going on in the ear.

Meniere's Disease

Meniere's disease is a condition of the inner ear affecting balance and hearing. It is thought to be caused by unusually large amounts of a fluid called endolymph creating a buildup of pressure in the inner ear. This pressure can cause the inner ear to send abnormal messages to the brain resulting in dizziness, vomiting and dull hearing which is mostly unilateral. Between 50,000 and 100,000 people a year develop Meniere's disease. This can be diagnosed by Electrocochleography and Glycerol test.

Electrocochleography
Electrocochleography (abbreviated ECochG or Ecog) is a technique of recording stimulus-related responses or electrical potentials of the inner ear and auditory nerve. It is useful for objective identification and monitoring of meniere's disease and endolymphatic hydrops (EH).
Glycerol Test

Here Glycerol is administered orally to patients to reduce fluid abnormalities in the inner ear. It may affect hearing temporarily (a few hours), the results of which are measured by pure tone audiogram.

Tinnitus Therapy

Tinnitus is the medical term for "hearing" noises in your ears when there is no outside source of the sounds. The noises you hear can be soft or loud. They may sound like ringing, blowing, roaring, buzzing, hissing, humming, whistling, or sizzling. It is a common problem, affecting about 17% of the general population around the world.

Management:

• Hearing aid- If the patient has hearing impairment, they can be benefited by hearing aid. By improving the patient's hearing, hearing aid lessens the attention patient gives to tinnitus and thus acts as masker.
• Tinnitus maskers- two types of maskers are non wearable or environmental masker (noisy fan, clock, underpillow speaker, television & cassette player), wearable (behind the ear and in the ear maskers).
• Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), uses a combination of low level, broad-band noise and counseling to achieve the habituation of tinnitus, that is the patient is no longer aware of their tinnitus, except when they focus their attention on it, and even then tinnitus is not annoying or bothersome.
